Study of Romans - 5

​Romans 6-7

The Word of God is a holy book. It expresses the very essence of God. So let’s start this month’s study by answering the question: What does the Word of God say about the Word of God?

“Is not My word like a fire?” says the LORD, “And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?”  (Jeremiah 23:29).
 
“So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it,” (Isaiah 55:11).
 
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away,” (Matthew 24:35).

11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God  (Revelation 19:11–13).
 
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1).
 
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14).

1. The Word is like a fire. When does it burn?  When it comes out of our mouths. Otherwise, it is just lying there on the paper, looking up at us, and wondering when we are going to put it to use.
2. The Word is a hammer that breaks rocks. Sometimes life’s circumstances seem as hard as rocks. Speaking the Word of God against those circumstances breaks them into pieces.
3. God’s Word will never die or go away. Its power is endless and eternal. We can use it on our own lives and be ourselves without limits.
4. This powerful Word is actually Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Word of God. He embodies everything God the Father ever said. His obedience to the Word, perfect as it was, paid for and claimed all of the power in the Word—for us!

So what do we do?

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).
 
And most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear (Philippians 1:14).
 
"Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death," (John 8:51).

1. We are to study the Word so that we can rightly divide it. We must pull the Word apart in order to find the patterns of what it says. Do Word studies, which means to take one word and see how it is used in various places in the Bible. Find the deepest meaning of each significant word.
2. Be bold. Speak the Word. That’s why we write out the Scriptures for the book of Romans in our words so that we become familiar with incorporating the Word of God into our conversation. Speaking the Word of God over any situation will change it.
3. In order to keep His Word, we must know it. Keeping it means to live it. It does not mean to put it on the shelf and nod at it when we pass that bookcase. It means to keep the Word so close to us that it becomes a way of life.
4. When we find something in His Word that He expects us to do, like loving our neighbor, then we must do it.

Scripture, to be considered a vital fact, must have two or three witnesses; that means it must be mentioned the same way two or three times in the Bible to be accepted as a directive from God. Or even more!  A list of the most frequently mentioned subjects in the Bible indicates their importance.  For example, how often is love mentioned?  Since that is what God is made of, we know the subject of love is extraordinarily important. However, sometimes God hides His best directives in just two or three witnesses so that only the truly faithful and diligent will find it.  He is a rewarder to those who diligently seek Him.
 
If something is mentioned only once in the Bible, then it is simply there as explanation or description, not as fact, and certainly not as law. The “two or three times” factor is used extensively in the Bible.

“But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established,’” (Matthew 18:16).
 
This will be the third time I am coming to you. “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.” (2 Corinthians 13:1).
 
“One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established,” (Deuteronomy 19:15).

We are not allowed to interpret Scripture for ourselves. Scripture explains itself. Find at least two times a subject is mentioned, and you will understand it better. The more times you find a subject, the better you will understand it. My favorite way to study the Bible is to pursue words of a certain subject and find the depth of the meaning. I do that by using Strong’s Concordance and Power Bible computer program. There are many, many devices available today to help you with Word studies.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16).
 
16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in “whom I am well pleased.” 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit, (2 Peter 1:16-21).

A good way to start your study is to memorize the books of the Bible in their order. That way you will know where to find Hosea when you need to look something up there. For this study let me give you one last, life-giving understanding about the Word of God.

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63).

Because Jesus is in you, the words you speak are spirit and they are life. Speak what you want, and you will have it. Speak what you don’t want, and you will have that. Choose your words carefully.


Month Five

Week One:  Romans 6:10-18
Week Two:  Romans 6:19-7:6
Week Three:  Romans 7:7-16
Week Four:  Romans 7:17-25
 

Each week follow this format:

Day One:  Read assigned verses to yourself three times.
Day Two:  Read the verses out loud three times.
Day Three:  Copy the verses into a notebook.
Day Four:  Write the assigned verses in your own words.
Day Five:  Taking into consideration all the verses you’ve read up to now, ask the Lord to choose one verse that He wants you to meditate on. Take that verse, meditate on it every day, and let it transform you to be more like the image of Jesus
 
Each day of this month ask the Lord what He wants you to do for someone else. Then do it for Him.
 
Keep a journal of what you’ve done in obedience and record the results.
